Definition of Tic disorder

Tic disorder:A disorder characterized by the presence of tics. If bothmotorand vocal tics are present for more than six months, thediagnosisof Tourettesyndromemay be made. Diagnosis is by observation. Treatment is not usually recommended fortics that are not bothersome to thepatient. When treatment is desired,medicationchoices include theblood-pressure drugsguanfacine(brand name:Tenex) andcatapres(brand name: Clonadine), or one of theatypicalor older neuroleptics.
