Tagamet(cimetidine) amdProtonixDelayed-Release Oral Suspension and Delayed-Release Tablets (pantoprazolesodium) are used to treat and prevent certain types of ulcer, to treat conditions that cause the stomach to produce too much acid, and to treatgastroesophageal refluxdisease (GERD).

Protonix is also used to treat erosiveesophagitisin adult patients, and it is intended for short-term treatment (less than 10 days).

Tagamet and Protonix belong to different drug classes. Tagamet is ahistaminereceptorantagonistand Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).

Tagamet is available both over-the-counter (OTC) and as ageneric.

Side effects of Tagamet and Protonix that are similar include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, joint pain, diarrhea, or nausea.

Side effects of Tagamet that are different from Protonix include depression, agitation, breast swelling or tenderness (in men), muscle pain, skin rash, or constipation.

Side effects of Protonix that are different from Tagamet include injection site reactions (redness, pain, swelling), vomiting, abdominal or stomach pain, gas, weight changes, tired feeling, or sleep problems (insomnia).

Both Tagamet and Protonix may interact withketoconazoleor blood thinners.

Tagamet may also interact withantacidsorantidepressants.

Protonix may also interact with atazanavir, nelfinavir,ampicillin,digoxin,diuretics(water pills), iron, ormethotrexate.

Common side effects of Tagamet include:

• flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling).

Tell your doctor if you experience unlikely but serious side effects of Tagamet Injection including:

• decreased sweating,
• fast/irregular heartbeat,
• mental/mood changes (such as confusion, hallucinations, agitation, nervousness, unusual excitement),
• difficulty urinating, or
• decreased sexual ability.

Common side effects of Protonix include:

• injection site reactions (redness, pain, swelling),
• headache,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• abdominal or stomach pain,
• diarrhea,
• gas,
• dizziness,
• joint pain,
• weight changes,
• drowsiness,
• tired feeling, or

Tagamet is also used to treatgastroesophagealrefluxdisease (GERD), when stomach acid backs up into theesophagusand causesheartburn.

Protonix IV(pantoprazole sodium) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used for short-term treatment (less than 10 days) of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and a history of erosive esophagitis in adult patients.

Tagamet may interact withamantadine, quinidine,antihistamines, decongestants, appetite suppressants, phenothiazines, or antidepressants. Tell your doctor all prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. During pregnancy, Tagamet should be used only when prescribed. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Protonix may interact with atazanavir, blood thinners, digoxin, diuretics (water pills), ketoconazole, or methotrexate.

Protonix may also interact with nelfinavir, ampicillin, or iron.

Dose of Tagamet depends on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the medication.

The recommended adult dose of Protonix is 40 mg once daily.

• Protonix Oral Suspension should be taken 30 minutes before a meal
• Protonix Oral Suspension should only be taken with applesauce or apple juice 30 minutes before a meal.
• Protonix Oral Suspension should not be taken in or with water or other liquids, or with other foods.
• Protonix Oral Suspension should not be chewed or crushed.
• Protonix Oral Suspension packet should not be divided to make a smaller dose.
