Dr. Shaziya Allarakha is a medical writer for MedicineNet, and volunteers for COVID-19 relief efforts and other nonprofit health initiatives.
While pursuing her MD, Dr. Allarakha was involved in research on diabetes and cancer. After completing her masters, she taught medical students in addition to continuing research work. Dr. Allarakha has worked as a scientist at one of the top research institutes in India, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), headquarters. During her tenure at ICMR, she worked in collaboration with an international group of scientists from the Center for Global Health Research and the Public Health Foundation of India.
Dr. Allarakha worked with giants in the epidemiology field to calculate the state-level burden of diseases, injuries, and disabilities in India. She was also part of the Million Death Study group whose findings on cardiovascular diseases published in The Lancet. Dr. Allarakha’s publishing credits include a broad list of medical publications, book chapters, abstracts, and patient information on various health topics in national and international peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Allarakha’s love for humanitarian medicine and public health took her to various villages, towns, and cities in India during her time with the World Health Organisation. She worked at the grassroots level to understand various communicable and non-communicable diseases and how existing chronic health conditions affect the spread of those diseases.
