Neuropathic pain:Chronic pain resulting frominjuryto the nervous system. The injury can be to thecentral nervous system(brainandspinal cord) or theperipheral nervous system(nerves outside the brain and spinalcord). Neuropathic pain can occur aftertraumaand many diseases such as multiple sclerosis and stroke. It is common and affects more than 2 million peopleinthe US alone. This type ofpainis notoriously difficult to treat.
