Methsuximide

Methsuximide is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of absence seizures (also called “petit malseizures).

Common side effects of methsuximide include:

• drowsiness
• dizziness
• stomach/abdominal pain
• loss of appetite
• nausea
• vomiting
• weight loss
• diarrhea
• constipation
• headache
• loss of balance or coordination
• nervousness
• confusion
• blurred vision

Serious side effects of methsuximide include:

• hives
• difficulty breathing
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

• trouble sleeping
• impulsive behavior
• irritableness
• agitation
• hostility
• aggression
• restlessness
• hyperactivity(mentally or physically)

• unusual bleeding (nose, mouth)
• weakness
• tiredness
• confusion
• hallucination
• unusual thoughts or behavior
• extreme fear
• worsening seizures
• joint pain or swelling with fever
• swollen glands
• muscle aches
• chest pain
• vomiting
• patchy skin color
• burning in your eyes
• skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling

Rare side effects of methsuximide include:

• none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

• Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, coordination loss, unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors
• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision,tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights
• Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, light-headedness, or passing out

Adult and pediatric dosage

Capsule

• 150 mg
• 300 mg

Absence seizures

Adult dosage

• Initial: 300 mg orally once a day
• May increase by 300 mg/wk; not to exceed 1.2 g/d in divided doses

Pediatric dosage

• Children under 12 years: Not established
• Children aged 12 years and older
• Initial: 300 mg orally once a day
• May increase by 300 mg/wk; not to exceed 1.2 g/d in divided doses

• Methsuximide has serious interactions with the following drugs:
  • apalutamide
  • lonafarnib
  • metoclopramide intranasal
  • olopatadine intranasal
  • ropeginterferon alfa 2b
• Methsuximide has moderate interactions with at least 35 other drugs.
• Methsuximide has minor interactions with at least 27 other drugs.
