What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Methsuximide?

Common side effects of methsuximide include:

  • stomach/abdominal pain
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • weight loss
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • headache
  • loss of balance or coordination
  • nervousness
  • confusion
  • blurred vision

Serious side effects of methsuximide include:

  • hives
  • difficulty breathing
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

Rare side effects of methsuximide include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, coordination loss, unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision,tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, light-headedness, or passing out

What Are the Dosages of Methsuximide?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Capsule

  • 150 mg
  • 300 mg

Absence seizures

Adult dosage

  • Initial: 300 mg orally once a day
  • May increase by 300 mg/wk; not to exceed 1.2 g/d in divided doses

Pediatric dosage

  • Children under 12 years: Not established
  • Children aged 12 years and older
  • Initial: 300 mg orally once a day
  • May increase by 300 mg/wk; not to exceed 1.2 g/d in divided doses
