Definition of Lichen planus

Lichen planus:A commonskindiseasewith small itchy pink or purple spots on thearmsor legs.

The lesions (abnormalareas) on the skininlichen planusare typically polygonal, flat (hence, the term planus), andpruritic(itchy). Occurs characteristically on the wrists, shins, lower back andgenitalia. Involvement of thescalpmay lead to hair loss.

The cause(s) of lichen planus are unknown. However, it can be triggered by the use of certain drugs (thiazidediuretics, phenothiazines, antimalarials).

Treatment is with局部corticosteroids. In most cases, the disease spontaneously regresses 6 months to 2 years afteronset.
