How Do Natural Penicillins Work?

Penicillins are a group of antibiotics used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections (gram-positive andgram-negative). It was discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming (a professor ofbacteriology) from a mold, the extract of which he named "penicillin." The discovery of penicillin has often been described as a miracle drug. They were among the first medications to be effective against many bacterial infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci.

Penicillins work by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis (cell walls are necessary to protect the bacteria from theirenvironmentand keep the contents of the cell together) by attacking the peptidoglycans (a mesh-like structure that increases the strength of the cell wall) leading to the bursting of the bacteria and eventually its death.

Approximately 10% of people report anallergyto penicillins, whereas life-threatening reactions are extremely rare (0.03%). Skin testing for allergy may be performed to confirm if the person is allergic to penicillin.

• Oral fungal infections
• Kidney problems (reduced urination)
