On a cellular level,Alzheimer'sdisease is characterized by the finding of unusual helicalproteinfilamentsinnervecells of the brain. These twisted filaments are called neurofibrillary tangles. In the brain,Alzheimer's diseaseinvolves degeneration of thecorticalregions, especially the额andtemporallobes. There is currently nocurefor Alzheimer's disease, but new medications and therapies appear to slow its progress and improve thepatient's ability to function.
